Free membership gets even better
9th January 2008
Basic membership of LostCousins has ALWAYS been free, and it will remain free indefinitely.
We're delighted to announce an improvement to our free membership terms. From now on all members will be able to search for extended matches - previously this feature was restricted to paying subscribers.
What is an extended match?
There are two types of relatives, those who share our ancestry - generally known as 'blood relatives' - and those who are only related by marriage or adoption. For example, your mother's sister - your aunt - is a blood relative of yours, but her husband - your uncle - is only related to you by marriage.
The primary purpose of LostCousins is to find your cousins, people who share your ancestors. But, as you may have discovered in the past, other relatives are often in a position to provide all sorts of useful information.
We therefore extended the matching process some time ago to include those other relatives, and called the new feature extended matching, to distinguish it from our standard cousin search.
Extended matches are shown in italics on your My Cousins page, so you'll always know whether or not a relative we've found is a cousin of yours, or simply related by marriage or adoption.
Note: occasionally we'll upgrade a relative to cousin status after you - or they - have entered more relatives, allowing us to identify a blood relationship that wasn't apparent at first.
